Boldin is the financial confidence platform, an all-in-one planning tool that helps hundreds of thousands of households build, manage, and optimize their financial future. Every month, 20,000+ people create a free plan and thousands convert to paying subscribers. We are profitable, growing, and backed by a deep data asset: millions of planning sessions, roughly 2M conversational AI messages, and rich behavioral telemetry across the full customer lifecycle.
We are building our first dedicated data science function, and this role will define how Boldin uses data science, and who does it, for years to come.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are hiring our first Lead Data Scientist to turn Boldin’s growing data into insights that shape what we build and how our customers plan their financial futures, and to build the team that carries that work forward. You will partner directly with product, engineering, and go-to-market teams to drive decisions across the full funnel, from acquisition and activation through retention and expansion, and to productize data-driven features that deliver measurable value to customers.
This is a foundational, player-coach hire. You will not inherit a playbook; you will write one. You will start hands-on, defining our experimentation culture, establishing the metrics that matter, and proving that data science can move the needle at Boldin. As the function grows, you will hire, mentor, and manage a small team of data scientists, setting the technical bar and the standards they work to. If you thrive on ambiguity, love working backwards from business problems, and want to grow from senior individual contributor into the leader of a function, this role is for you.
A note on scope: This role is designed to grow into a people-management position. You will begin as a hands-on senior contributor and take on direct reports as the function scales, so prior leadership experience is required.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Build and lead the data function. Set technical standards, establish ways of working, and, as the team grows, hire, onboard, mentor, and manage data scientists. Act as a player-coach: ship work yourself while raising the bar for everyone around you.
Own funnel analytics and optimization. Map the full customer journey, from first visit through paid conversion and long-term retention. Identify where people drop off, why, and what we can do about it. Define activation metrics and instrument experiments to move them.
Build and iterate on predictive models. Develop churn prediction, trial conversion scoring, and uplift models that power targeted interventions (email, in-app messaging, pricing offers). Measure what works through rigorous A/B testing.
Productize data science for customers. Partner with product to develop data-driven features, such as improved retirement score modeling, smart asset allocation recommendations, and personalized planning insights, that make our customers’ financial plans meaningfully better.
Establish experimentation rigor. Design and analyze A/B tests across product and marketing. Build frameworks so the broader team can run experiments confidently and interpret results correctly.
Define the metrics that matter. Work with leadership to establish the top-line KPIs that tell us whether we’re winning (customer lifetime value, activation rates, early churn, and more) and build dashboards that make them visible and actionable.
Advise on data enrichment. Identify external data sources (demographic, behavioral, financial) that could sharpen our models and improve targeting for acquisition and retention.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Required:
6+ years in a product-focused data science, ideally within a cross-functional product team
1+ years of leadership experience. You have formally managed data scientists or analysts, or served as a tech lead, project lead, or mentor with clear ownership of others’ work and growth. You are ready to take on direct reports, and you want to.
Advanced SQL and Python proficiency (pandas, scikit-learn, or equivalent)
Hands-on experience designing, running, and analyzing A/B tests and experiments
Practical predictive modeling skills: classification, regression, model evaluation, and an emphasis on shipping models that drive decisions rather than optimizing for theoretical accuracy
Strong communication: you can translate complex analysis into clear, actionable recommendations for PMs, engineers, and executives
Comfort with ambiguity. You define problems first, then solve them. You don’t wait for perfectly scoped tickets
Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (statistics, economics, computer science, mathematics, or similar) or equivalent experience
Preferred:
Experience as a first or early data science hire who went on to grow and lead the function
Experience hiring, building, or formally managing a data team
Experience with modern data stack tools (BigQuery, dbt, Looker, or equivalents)
NLP or text mining experience (especially relevant for our conversational AI data)
Familiarity with cloud ML platforms (Vertex AI, BigQuery ML, or similar)
Background in financial services, SaaS, or subscription businesses
Exposure to uplift modeling, causal inference, or marketing mix modeling
WHAT WE OFFER
Competitive salary plus meaningful equity in a profitable, growing company
Flexible PTO and a team that values sustainable pace
Personal laptop.
Health and wellness package.
Budget for English lessons.
The chance to build and lead a function from scratch, and to define how data science works at Boldin, and who does it
A mission that matters: helping people retire with confidence, not anxiety
